By snapping up under-performing businesses in East Anglia and bringing in investment, the Chestnut Group has built a multifarious brand in just six years.
At the head of it all is founder Philip Turner, who left a high flying banking job in the city before taking the leap into hospitality in 2012, founding the group which he refuses to define as a pub, restaurant or hotel business.
We have featured Philip in last year’s Power List, but in just 12 months, he has spearheaded the acquisition of four new properties to bring into the portfolio and as a result deserves a place in the 2019 edition.
In August 2018, the 16-bedroom The Ship at Dunwich and Suffolk coaching inn, The Westleton Crown, was acquired from Agellus Hotels, marking The Chestnut Group’s first takeover on the coast. Money was then ploughed into a refurbishment at both properties in a bid to bring ‘sold rates back in line with rack rates’ and create consistent brand standrads across each business.
Less than a year later and expansion beckoned again, as The Chestnut Group acquired two inns in East Anglia, continuing to blaze a trail in the region.
The group added The Weeping Willow, near Bury St Edmunds and The Eight Bells at Saffron Walden to its group of country and coastal inns.
Since the first acquisition in 2012, Turner has been fuelled by a clear vision and ambition of what he wants each property and the wider portfolio to be, while still managing to be reactive to trends and consumer demands.
